چکیده

We present an overview of GProM, a generic provenance middleware for relational databases. The system supports diverse provenance and annotation management tasks through query instrumentation, i.e., compiling a declarative frontend language with provenance-specific features into the query language of a backend database system. In addition to introducing GProM, we also discuss research contributions related to GProM including the first provenance model and capture mechanism for transaction provenance, a unified framework for answering whyand why-not provenance questions, and provenanceaware query optimization. Furthermore, by means of the example of post-mortem debugging of transactions, we demonstrate how novel applications of provenance are made possible by GProM.

A Generic Provenance Middleware for Database Queries, Updates, and Transactions

We present an architecture and prototype implementation for a generic provenance database middleware (GProM) that is based on the concept of query rewrites, which are applied to an algebraic graph representation of database operations. The system supports a wide range of provenance types and representations for queries, updates, transactions, and operations spanning multiple transactions. GProM...

Interoperability for Provenance-aware Databases using PROV and JSON

Since its inception, the PROV standard has been widely adopted as a standardized exchange format for provenance information. Surprisingly, this standard is currently not supported by provenanceaware database systems limiting their interoperability with other provenance-aware systems. In this work we introduce techniques for exporting database provenance as PROV documents, importing PROV graphs ...

Dissecting the Pathophysiology of Depression with a Swiss Army Knife

In this issue of Neuron, Hen and colleagues shed new light on the behavioral effects of fluoxetine, one of the most commonly prescribed antidepressants. This report prompts us to revisit our understanding of the neural circuitry mediating mood disorders and also provides a framework for developing new antidepressant treatments.
